Dorset: The first big adventure

09:15

Last year I finally got to embark my first ever traveling around beautiful England. I've never strayed far from home but always had that passion to see the world, my partner of course encouraged this. A short time before his birthday we planned to go away for two nights. I wanted to hide under a rock and shut out the world once I realised everything that needed planning; finding the right place, hotel and activities to make sure we got the most out of our trip, but once I started I couldn't stop. Tom had seen on TV about Dorset; it's quiet, quaint, beautiful and Tom loves everything and anything about dinosaurs so the chance to see the Jurassic coast? We just couldn't help ourselves. Maybe we get the chance to discover our own dinosaur... Kezomausaur has a lovely ring to it.

After much searching we found a little island called Portland and the pictures on google didn't do it any justice. It's not really an island to itself but a cut off from the mainland, connected only by a solitary bridge built over a pebble beach. The hotel we stayed at only cost us £200 for a room that could house the three of us for two nights.

It took 5 hours for us to drive down to Portland. The views were amazing going through England's beautiful countryside. As soon as we got there we checked in and started our adventure... We decided to scale a cliff side. It started as a simple walk down the coastline and quickly turned into 'we can climb that', 'We can go a little higher', 'That looks easy' and even quicker, 'I think we might need to call for air support'. We nearly got stuck up a cliff face because we couldn't help but give in to our 'Skyrim' instincts. Tom and Steve nearly died via rock slide under my feet and to make things even more hilarious I was in a dress. It's safe to say we survived and was very tired afterwards so we found a lovely restaurant on the other side of the island which didn't only serve seafood - which is near impossible at the coast.
(Unexpected selfies always go one of two ways...)

On the second day we woke up to the best breakfasts we have ever had in our lives. I can not recommend that hotel enough. Right by the sea, lovely staff that helped with everyone of our questions, comfy and clean rooms and a breakfast to die for! We decided to go into West Bay town, a small drive from Portland. It had the sandy beaches and Jurassic coastline we came to see. We went to a free museum which had the towns life documented and all about the Jurassic coast with a few small fossils. Then at last we got to see the coast line.. We hiked for a good two hours before sitting and relaxing on the beach taking in our surroundings. It was completely breath taking, the sea was the brightest I have ever seen. Alas we did not find a fossil or get to name our own dinosaur. Sad to say we had to go home the day after but I will most definitely coming back.
